Geneva is split by the lake into two banks. Pâquis on the right bank is the busiest area, as it ties together Cornavin station, the city beach and the cafes. Eaux-Vives by the water scores the highest for location, and prices climb to match. It is cheaper in the student districts of Plainpalais and Jonction by the Rhone, and in Grottes and Saint-Gervais right by the station. Hotel guests get a free Geneva Transport Card for trams and buses, so a base further out is still convenient.

Early spring is cheapest, in March, outside the peak of conferences and fairs. December is the priciest, along with big UN events, when lakeside rates can double.

The student districts of Plainpalais and Jonction by the Rhone, and the streets near the station in Grottes and Saint-Gervais, usually have the lowest prices. Eaux-Vives by the lake is the priciest. With a free transport card, a base further out is still convenient.
Pâquis or near Cornavin station is the easiest choice. It is the most popular area with guests, with the Jet d'Eau fountain, the lake promenade and the boat pier within a walk.
About three months ahead is best. Supply in the city is limited and the cheaper rooms go first, especially in December and around big conference dates.
